Learning to be British - 24/05/2008

I have just learnt from reading the BBC website that 500 schools will teach children about what it is to be British in the 21st century. I think this is a great idea.

I teach at a school which is extremely multi-cultural and we are fortunate enough that there is great cohesion amongst the pupils. However, I know of schools in our area where there is a divide amongst the pupils from differing backgrounds.

Teaching children at an early age about what it is to be British can foster the sort of national pride and unity that is slowly diminishing in our schools. I would welcome the government introducing this across the entire country after this initial test.
